Many of the moms of the children attending the new Mayan Families preschool/feeding program in El Barranco, do not know how to read or write, not even their name. They had to put their thumb print when they went to register their children. With the help of Mayan Families and their donors, their children will never have to do this.

Carlos and Titi's project
On Saturday, Don showed Titi the video of Claudia's Story and she cried. She immediately asked to use the computer to make a brochure asking people to help Claudia and Mayan Families. She has been working on it since then. Today I showed the video to Carlos and again, without me having to say a word, he said "we need to send this to everybody we know, they need to help Claudia!". He is not very involved in our work with Mayan Families but today he decided to do something. He immediately asked if I could print pictures to make a board and ask for donations. He said he wanted to post it on Facebook. Only Titi got a chance to do it but we will post it in his page too.
I am really happy to see them wanting to do something for sweet Claudia.

Claudia's Story
I have seen this video before but today I am feeling very helpless. It is a very touching video filmed by two Mayan Families volunteers and it tells the story of Claudia, a girl who lives in San Jorge La Laguna. I have been there and gone to many houses like Claudia's. I wish I could do more to help children like her. I am sure I could do more, I just need to try harder.

Visit July 2010
These are some photos of the things we did during our last visit to Mayan Families. We visited the preschool/feeding center in San Antonio Palopo, a town devastated by Tropical Storm Agatha. Some of these children lost relatives in the mudslides. We went with another family that was visiting as well. They had brought some crafts and we helped the kids with them. Carlos and Titi loved helping them wash their hands for lunch and then they handed the little kids their food. For some of them, this is the only food they will have all day.
Titi and I came back another day to give out some of the shoes we brought with us. Titi helped a lot. First she and the other girl sorted all the shoes in the kitchen area. We would ask them to give us a certain type of shoe and they will search and give us one that they thought it would fit. Titi then helped fit shoes. She did not stop. I was so proud of her.
I went to visit Lucas, a young man diagnosed with cancer. We tried to make his life easier. Mayan Families gave him a new matress and blankets. We gave him the DVD player we had brought with us. I went to the market and got him some DVDs and books. We also bought food for his family and medicine for him.
Titi helped bring some puppies to the Vet. She loved it! She was in love with the brown puppy and wanted to bring him home with us. Carlos and Titi played and loved those cute puppies.
